hello! today marks the beginning of a five part series about my five week study abroad in berlin! i am super excited to share it all with you guys. there may be some breaks in between, which is probably best for everyone because i think five back to back posts about berlin would be kind of tiring...
anyways, today i wanted to share my first week in berlin. most of the week was spent adjusting, getting used to the neighborhood we were staying in, and getting accustomed to using the u-bahn/s-bahn (the subway system). it was tons of fun just getting to know berlin, so here's some things we did!

the very first group excursion we had was called "a walking tour of berlin." if you happen to know anything about berlin, you know it's huge. so it wasn't exactly of berlin, it was more just one specific neighborhood. we saw the cathedral on museum island, which i have to say is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. nearby was the neue wache memorial. the memorial is a big room with a statue of a mother mourning over her dead child. it commemorates all victims of war and dictatorship.
as an excursion we went to the german history museum. it is a beautiful museum and has some really fascinating art and historical pieces in it. there's tons of museums in that same general area, especially on museum island. you're probably not going to want to go to all of them, but the buildings are beautiful in themselves from the outside, which you should definitely check out. near our hotel there was a rooftop restaurant with a beautiful view of the zoo and the city. we were frequent visitors needless to say!
the hotel we stayed in was nice, with a beautiful view of a parking structure right outside our window (note the sarcasm).
one of the coolest things we got to do was get a special tour inside the german parliament building. this place amazed me; it seems so old on the outside, but on the inside it's super modern. the last pic is from the same rooftop restaurant; as you can see i wasn't joking when i said we became frequent visitors. :)
our professor took us to a neighborhood in east berlin to try the acclaimed best currywurst in berlin, and it was definitely the best currywurst i had in germany. afterword we walked around the surrounding neighborhood which was beautiful. that night we went to the markt halle neun for dinner. every thursday night they have an indoor food market. i would highly recommend visiting if you happen to be in berlin on a thursday.
the hotel we stayed at was super close to the kaiser wilhelm memorial church. it was preserved even after being bombed, and next door they created this modern church that looks absolutely stunning on the inside.
so that's a little recap of my first week in berlin! there will be four more parts until i'm all done with sharing my study abroad trip. i hope you enjoyed it! xo shawndiz
