the catcher in the rye was the last book i read over the summer (earlier in the summer i read 1984 and jane eyre). while some students loath about reading serious books from the literary canon i actually really enjoy it... kind of. i don't like it when i have to finish reading a specific amount of chapters by a specific day and have to be prepared for a quiz on it. *cringes* what i do like is going through a book at my own pace, and figuring out all its layers of meaning on my own.
so back to this particular book. it was a great novel, not one of my all time favorites, but fantastic nonetheless. here's a little summary of what it's about (don't worry, no spoilers here!). holden caulfield, a sixteen year old boy from new york city, is growing up. the novel goes through his emotional personal struggles, and his perspective on grown ups.
Certain things they should stay the way they are. You ought to be able to stick them in one of those big glass cases and just leave them alone. I know that's impossible, but it's too bad anyway. - the catcher in the rye
in a way holden wishes childhood could last as long as those displays that get stuck in those big glass cases in the museum do.
i also really enjoyed this book because it was set in new york city. i've always loved big cities and i've dreamed of visiting new york, but that has yet to happen (crossing my fingers for soon though!). xo shawndiz
