my summer vacation is coming to an end, (i move this week!) and with that my mom decided to squeeze in one last mini vacation. she wouldn't tell me where we were going until that morning, and even then she didn't really know for sure herself. we simply decided to drive north along the coast and stop wherever we wanted. it was SO nice not having a strict itinerary; it really made it feel like a vacation. so thursday morning i packed my overnight bag and we decided to head for santa barbara. we stopped in downtown santa barbara for lunch, and i swear i ate some of the best pizza EVER. we ate at a restaurant called persona wood fired pizza; i would HIGHLY recommend it if you ever find yourself in santa barbara. after, we did some shopping then headed further north to solvang. solvang is a little danish town not too far from santa barbara. it hosts a number of adorable windmills and bakeries, not to mention the many boutique style gift shops. it usually has mild weather, but with our luck it was unusually hot. the stores close early and open late; on average from 10 am to 5 pm, so plan accordingly. we got there late, so after walking around a bit we started looking for a hotel and found the landsby. the landsby is a small boutique hotel located in the center of the town. we got the room for a great price since it was a week night, so i would suggest coming during the week if you want to stay there. the room came with breakfast and was overall a very homey, comfortable place. that night we ate at chomp burgers (yes i know, not very danish of us), and the food was delicious. we spent the next morning browsing through boutiques and bakeries where we bought plenty of bread. we then hit the road again, but stopped for lunch at any pink lovers dream: the madonna inn. their iconic pink bathed steak house doesn't open until 5 pm, so we ate at their coffee shop. after, we headed to the main hotel to take a look at their pink wonderland. upstairs they also have a lovely boutique were you can purchase their famous drinking glasses. we couldn't stay for long, so we got on the road again headed for hearst castle. this place is huge. they have a number of tours you can choose to go on; we chose the grand rooms tour because it was recommended for first time visitors. the castle houses art from around the world, and its architecture was influenced by many different eras and countries. hearst castle was the last stop on our trip. we spent the rest of the day/night driving back home and made it late friday night. overall it was a great trip. i would recommend it to anyone looking to go on a road trip up the california coast.
