as some of you may know, i moved out a little less than three weeks ago. i'm now attending the university of california san diego, and officially a college student! i know this post seems a little late, but believe me, the last few weeks have been a little busy. nevertheless, moving away to college is a HUGE life event, so a blog post was absolutely necessary. i just wanted to share what the experience was like, and how i've been transitioning.
i'll start with the actual move in. the thursday before move in day, a close friend asked me if i wanted to go to disneyland on friday. i hadn't been to disney in FOREVER, so i naturally couldn't pass up the opportunity. so i woke up at 5am on friday, spent a super fun day at disneyland, got home at midnight, and woke up at 5am the next day to move. it was so much fun, but also really tiring. i don't regret it at all though; my last day of summer vacation was spent in the happiest place on earth with a great friend.
i moved in on saturday, which was obviously an emotional day for my family and i. i haven't ever spent much time away from my family, so i assume moving was a bigger change for me than a lot of other people. i know i am incredibly lucky though. i think i speak for everyone in my suite when i say we were very fortunate with the people we were placed with. we don't really have dorm related problems (knock on wood!), and in general everyone likes hanging out together. i can't imagine how stressful it would be if our situation was otherwise.
now for the transition. one of the issues i have is i don't adapt well. being in a new environment, combined with not really knowing how things work yet and trying to find my footing have proved very stressful. in these situations i usually try to make everything else in my life as perfect and ordered as possible; which just makes the problem worse because the world is never perfect, and sometimes things happen for no reason and you can't expect there to be an explanation for it.
overall though, i would say it has been a great experience so far. i'm excited to share my journey through college on my blog. it's true i'm a molecular biology/premed major, but i think this blog will be a really fun place to share my creative side. i hope you join me for the ride! xo shawndiz
